Dr. Bishop Aretha Morton of
Full Tabernacle Baptist Church

The 500 block of Washington St. in Wilmington, which houses Tabernacle Full Gospel Baptist Church, was renamed Bishop Aretha E. Morton Way after the longtime pastor, female pioneer, chaplain and community worker on Sunday afternoon.
Morton was the first female pastor of a Baptist church in Delaware and the first female and African-American fire department chaplain; she has been a community leader of Wilmington for generations.
She is Delaware Tech’s 2017 Black History Month Honoree for being known as a trail blazer for women in ministry.

“Be it known to all that Michael S. Purzycki, Mayor of the City of Wilmington, proclaims Bishop Aretha E. Morton a local treasure,” said Mayor Mike Purzycki. “And congratulates her on the honor bestowed on her by Delaware Technical Community College as the 2017 Black History Month Honoree, the 20th celebration of the award.”

Each year Delaware Tech celebrates Black History Month by recognizing a member of the community for outstanding personal and professional achievements. Morton said she appreciates the honor.

“This is really a humbling experience for me. It really is,” said Morton. “I do what I do. I really don’t look for accolades, but somehow they manage to come to me. I thank God that I’ve been able to really be in the city all that I can be.”

In 1983, Morton became the first woman to pastor a Baptist church in Delaware.

“It was scary because as you know during those times it’s something that wasn’t heard of--especially in ministry," she said.

Morton served as pastor of the Tabernacle Full Gospel Baptist Cathedral in Wilmington for 33 years. She is now the Pastor Emeritus, after retiring in 2016.

“I guess you can say I took the dare because they dared me to get into the pulpit, but I took the dare, and here I am today,” said Morton.

She made history in 1993 by becoming the first woman and the first African-American to be appointed Chaplain of the Wilmington Fire Department. She was the highest-ranking woman in the department, and held the rank of Deputy Chief. She made history again in 2006, when she was appointed State Bishop of Delaware. Morton is the first woman to be Delaware State Bishop for the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship International.

The Delaware House of Representatives, city council, and county council all gave tributes to Morton Tuesday. Delaware Lieutenant Governor Bethany Hall Long praised Morton, and congratulated her on behalf of Governor John Carney.

Born and raised in Wilmington, Morton loves the city. She wants to see peace return to Wilmington, which has been plagued by violent crime, especially in the New Year.

“I want the joy back. I want the happiness back. I want the youth to be able to laugh and not be afraid,” said Morton. “Let’s go back to the double Dutch days, and hopscotch days, and kids not being afraid to come out and play, and to skate. I just want the freedom of joy to come back to this city.”

The Canaan Baptist Church Family and higher Ground Education Committee wants to salute Dr. Alan Bullock for his work with the Board members in working to make these Scholarship Awards a reality. Each individual who receives a scholarship is different.  It all depends on their income and their academic achievements. The scholarship awards money was generated and given out in 2016 for these Awards to the deserving students.

Your trials of yesterday are your triumphs of today, and turn your mess into a message.

The solution of racism is to confront it non-confrontational.

Danka from Kenya

I was very impressed when these people came here from Africa.

I did not have that much money with me I had about twenty ($20) or twenty five ($25) dollars on me.  I gave Danka five ($5) dollars because he wants to be a preacher.  Five ($5.00) dollars US currency is equal to 516.999 (517) Kenyan Shillings, one ($1.00) dollar US currency is equal to 103.397 Kenyan Shillings).
1 Kenyan Shilling is equal to .00967144 USD.

The other little bit of money I had I spread it around with the other guys.

After the service these two guys keep following me around and I did not know what was up so I backed up and I started talking to them, then I shared with them how the University of Delaware helped my family the Wallers from Virginia.

Danka is 14 years old and a freshman from Kenya.

I asked my man Danka would he do a video for me.  I am adopting him as my son since my other Brother Terrance Clay is no longer with us.  The track group came from Kenya to Partnership with the University of Delaware International Competition.  Thanks Rev Bullock the lady teacher that made the trip from Kenya with them.

Rev. Dr. Alan Bullock blessed two Safe Houses in Wilmington, Delaware.

Pastor Bullock, left, came by 700 N. Buttonwood Street and blessed it then came to 2302 Carter Street and blessed the house and the community.

Douglas Montgomery, picture on the right, was the house man who was in charge of keeping things running smoothly.  That is him standing in from of 2302 with his walker smiling.

Anyone who would like to donate to our cause of sending people to a drug program and or a treatment program can send a check or money order to Canaan Baptist Church in care of Canaan Baptist Church.   It will be distributed between the two of us (Rev Daniels of Canaan Baptist Church and Earl Woodlen of the Harriet Tubman Safe House) who sends the individuals to treatment.

Earl is the street man who puts the cards on the windows of cars and pass out to people on the street and Rev Daniels takes them to treatment or a drug program in his van.

Prison Ministry at Rev. Aaron’s Moor's Church

Once a year on a Sunday at Manna Christian Fellowship Church (this year was the 16th) a chaplain comes from Howard R. Young Correctional Institution (Gander Hill) to speak on Prison Ministry.  This year it was Joe Kadke.

Dr. Bullock read from Exodus Chapter 20 Verse 12.  Honor you’re Father and your Mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord thy God is given you.  Give honor to whom honor is due.  God gave the Frame work by which you should govern yourselves which were the 10 commands not multiple choices.  You do not choose which one to obey.

Dr. Bullock received a scholarship for basketball to the University of Alaska and received a Bachelor of Social Work Degree while there. He believes in helping kids because that is how he came up with help from others.  That is why his church does what they do because if he can make it, they can make it with some help.

Rev Daniels, right, from Canaan Baptist Church came and he prayed for the Community as well.  The man, left, Pastor Bullock is talking to Rev. Daniels came with his van and took him to Treatment.

I’m making a statement I talked to a chaplain who went to his church and told him he needed a donation because he wanted to help the people in prison.  They said why do you want to help them people?  He said because all lives matter.

We do not roll like that in Delaware we help all the people.

People places and things I believe in out of state treatment.  I believe you have to leave your environment.

Delaware Facts - Top 15 Facts about Delaware | Facts.net

Thomas Garret (August 21 1789 – January 25 1871) was a primary figure in the abolition of slavery. It is believed that over his lifetime he helped to free as many as 2,000 slaves and in the course of doing so, he lost his entire personal fortune. He became a friend and associate of Harriet Tubman who had worked on the Underground Railroad helping to free slaves from their masters. Garrett very often provided Tubman with shoes and clothes to pass on to her charges. Garrett himself had helped to free Tubman’s parents from threat of being captured, by giving them money, after Tubman’s father had been caught helping slaves to run away.

I told Pastor Manley that there is no work in Wilmington, Delaware  “There is a problem with young people being caught up in the system.”  He stated, “I have a big bus and we can take them out of there by the bus loads.”  I told him that would not be necessary but I can personally bring them to Virginia and to your church for prayer. Together and with the help from your Pastor, your church leaders and the members, we can mentor there children.  They are going to see that when I bring a brother or sister down to Virginia, they will hear me say, “Stay with me, I got your back.”  I will also say to them, “You are out of Wilmington, Delaware now, you are out of danger, relax and enjoy your new life."
If they have a dream, of continuing school, going to college, or just getting a good job, we are going to make their dream a reality.  We will assist them by finding grants and student loans. In Virginia they can go to the Navy, the Merchant Marines, Trade School, the Shipyards, the Hotel/Motel Industry or into Food Services.
